Today is ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’ and as Adam Ant would say, “Don’t you ever stop being dandy, showing me you’re handsome” or something like that

International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Yep, it’s a thing.
What began as an in-joke between two Northwest American dudes over drinks some time in 2002 has now evolved into somewhat of a global phenomenon. Yes, ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’ is a very real thing that now takes place annually – and globally – every September 19.
We’re not really sure why, and even the original organisers appear stuck for words when asked, stating simply that “silliness is the holiday’s best selling point” (the start of September sees Labor Day shenanigans happening in the US and, incidentally, is the beginning of tertiary holidays in Australia).
Suffice to say, who needs an excuse to drink and be merry, or pillage and score cool loot, with the organisers going on to say “the point of it is, there is no point”.
Still, followers are encouraged to organise group get-togethers where they and their pirate pals promise to share sordid stories from upon seas far, far away.

Incidentally, did you know the word ‘tavern’ came from pirate talk? Pirates are known as much for their carousing as they are for their skullduggery and where better than a local pub or drinkhouse to carouse?
Apparently, it’s not just adults taking the pirate piss (while getting pissed), its sober folk, too, who can get into pirate-related celebrations at venues such as the WA Maritime Museum and the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.
If you’re not exactly sure how to talk like a pirate, here are some tips for you:
Use common phrases such as “Ahoy!” (hello), “Arrr!” (yes/agreement), or the simple “Aye!” (yes).
Address friends as “Matey”.
When surprised, say something like “Shiver me timbers!”
Also, change personal pronouns, saying “ye” for “you” and “me” for “my”. Incorporate a deep, rough voice, and emphasise the “Rrrrr” sound, making it more pronounced and rumbling in the throat.
Too much time on our hands, really…
