I kissed a dweeby ex-PM and I liked it: the low-down on Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau’s relationship

It’s like a postmodern fever dream – the out-of-touch pop star who thinks she’s an astronaut dating the out-of-touch politician who thinks he’s a president. When I read news over the weekend that Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau were dating, I thought AI had popped an ecstasy tablet that must have been laced with acid.

From what we know, the ex-Canadian prime minister (he resigned officially in March this year) and the Teenage Dream singer have been going out – only recently – and have been seen socially together over the past few weeks.

Earlier this month, photos surfaced showing Perry and Trudeau on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara, US, looking like they were locking tongues. Before that, in July, they were seen dining together at a restaurant in Montreal called Le Violon (cue the strings).

Following that dinner date, the restaurant’s co-owner, Danny Smiles, commented that the two didn’t show overt public displays of affection during the meal and that “he didn’t get any dating vibes” from their behaviour, with the two looking more “like two friends having dinner”. There’s also been footage of Trudeau attended one of Perry’s ‘Lifetimes Tour’ concerts in Montreal, which intensified speculation.

Perry had ended her engagement with Australian actor Orlando Bloom in June 2025, and Trudeau had separated from his wife Sophie Grégoire in 2023. Perry has since been (just) outerspace on a rocket mission organised by Amazon owner Jeff Bezos, and Trudeau only this year gave up his leadership of Canada.

I wonder what media and political critic Russell Brand – who was once married to Katy, and who often disses whatever Justin has to say and do – thinks about the relationship and whether there’ll be any comment coming from the now-popular YouTuber.

Earlier this year, Katy Perry had the media in a stir after she’s flown to outerspace (well, just) and after an 11-minute rocket ride, called  herself an “astronaut”. Many detractors say the flight was so short (less than minutes), and Perry = far from being studied – had no right to give herself such a title.

Trudeau has had his fair share of grievances this year, too. His approval ratings dropped significantly, he resigned as leader of the Liberal Party in Canada – partly because of public dissatisfaction and with sharp criticism over rising housing costs, inflation and general cost of living, and h e promised to change Canada’s electoral system, but failed to deliver. Oh, and many Indigenous Canadians feel not enough has changed despite his rhetoric, and nothing was done about climate change.

So… two fantasists living out their teenage dreams together? Who’s going to argue with that
