Radiofrequency Microneedling: a quick and easy procedure with more gain than pain

This year, for me, has been about physical and physiological improvement. Getting in some meditation, more walks with the pet Chihuahua, lathering on the sunscreen, and enjoying more mud masks while lazing in the jacuzzi. I’ve also experienced several non-invasive procedures to assist in looking and feeling better: LED light therapy, teeth whitening, as well as regular sessions of Emface and Emsculpt treatments. All of these have been non-invasive, and all showed certain positive results. The closest I got to having any ‘invasive’ treatment is with RF Microneedling. And let me tell you – it’s a walk in the park!

RF needling, or radiofrequency microneedling, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy to enhance skin rejuvenation and reduce the visible signs of ageing. It can help reduce facial wrinkles, lighten scars and even help with acne removal.

While radiofrequency may appear to be a complex science, the procedure itself is really quite simple for the patient. During the treatment, tiny needles create controlled micro pricks in the skin, which triggers the body’s natural healing response and stimulates collagen production. At the same time, RF energy is delivered deep into the skin through the needles, providing heat that further boosts collagen and elastin production. This dual-action approach can improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, tighten skin, and minimise the appearance of scars, particularly acne scars.

Exion RF Microneedling is typically performed on the face, neck, and other areas where skin tightening or resurfacing is desired – and is even good for lightening stretch marks.

In preparation for the procedure, the patient’s face is well-numbed with a helpful anaesthetic. The numbing agent takes about 45 minutes to an hour to seep in so be ready to do some meditation while you’re laying there.

As I laid back, I first worried about the idea of 40 tiny needles being applied to delicate areas of my face, such as around the eyes. Yes they are needles made of pure gold but, still, I worried a little. but I needn’t have worried in the least. The Exion RF Microneedling device is operated by a professional clinician while AI also assists in keeping the treatment safe. If ever the clinician gets too close to delicate skin around the eye area, for example, the machine’s AI programming beeps as a warning.

After the procedure, my face felt warm and the areas of under and around the eyes had a slight ‘prickly’ sensation, but this subsided within half an hour.

To be honest, there was actually a warm after-glow feeling that lasted for a few hours that night. It’s the kind of sensation you feel on your face after a long day at the beach – even with sunscreen on.

Recovery time is therefore generally short, and while multiple sessions are often recommended for optimal results, many people notice improvements in skin tone and firmness after just a few treatments. I know noticed subtle improvement in skin smoothness after just two treatments, with lines beneath my eyes being slightly less visible.

I actually experienced this treatment ‘stacked’ with a couple of others – Emface and Emsculpt, and while it may seem overwhelming to have so much going on at once, it actually was all rather relaxing.

I’d strongly recommend RF Microneedling as one of the simpler procedures to improve the skin on face and body, and found the treatment to be comfortable enough to even do in a lunch hour again.

So what’s all the fuss about this treatment called Emface? It’s very much a no-fuss procedure, actually
