THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Lovers of cartoons, anime, manga and more should know: it’s International Animation Day

International Animation Day is celebrated every year on October 28 to honour the art of animation and its impact on entertainment, education, and culture around the world. The day was established in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA), to commemorate the first public screening of Emile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique in Paris on October 28, 1892.

One of earliest animations: Pauvre Pierrot as imagined by Louis Poyet in 1892.

This event marked a historic milestone in the development of animated cinema, years before the invention of traditional film. International Animation Day serves as a global tribute to the creativity, innovation, and storytelling power of animation — a medium that transcends language and cultural barriers to inspire audiences of all ages.

International Animation Day reminds the world of the magic that happens when art and technology unite, encouraging people everywhere to appreciate and support the artists who continue to shape this dynamic and ever-evolving creative industry.

From early hand-drawn shorts and stop-motion classics to today’s computer-generated blockbusters, animation continues to evolve as both an art form and a powerful tool of communication.

Across the world, animation studios, film festivals, art schools, and cultural organisations celebrate the day with screenings, workshops, exhibitions, and panel discussions. These events not only showcase the work of renowned animators but also provide a platform for emerging artists to share their talent. The celebration highlights the diversity of animation styles — including 2D, 3D, claymation, and experimental techniques — and acknowledges the contributions of animators, designers, and storytellers who bring imagination to life frame by frame. Beyond entertainment, animation plays an essential role in education, advertising, science visualisation, and social awareness campaigns, demonstrating its versatility and relevance in modern society.
