Australia’s biggest treasure hunt is on again: the Garage Sale Trail is back this weekend

No matter how much second-hand selling might be on the increase (thank you, eBay, Marketplace, et al), nothing beats a good old-fashioned garage sale. Indeed, the concept of selling from your own frontyard or back garden is still a phenomenon in Australia – so much so that there is an annual event called the ‘Garage Sale Trail’.
As Spring kicks off, as does Spring cleaning, so it’s that time of the year again when garages across the nation are being filled with stuff that punters no longer want, but where trash becomes treasure to other folks.
A not-for-profit community and sustainability campaign, the Garage Sale Trail encourages the reuse of pre-loved items. The idea is simple – sales are held on the same day around Australia and the combined impact of keeping hundreds of thousands of items from landfill is extraordinary.

It’s free to get involved and registration is open to all residential homes, local businesses, schools, community groups, cultural institutions, charities and anyone who’s up for a day of fun (and a bit of moolah-making).
Whether you’re a potential seller who wants to clear out and cash in, or a buyer on the hunt for some great retro bargains – or indeed, just want to get to know the neighbours as well as ‘do your bit’ for the environment – the Garage Sale Trail is for you.
Oh, and it’s ironic that the acronym for the Garage Sale Trail is GST, because guess what? You won’t have to pay any GST on any of the goods you sell!
The Garage Sale Trail takes place over two consecutive weekends: 8 & 9 November and 15 & 16 November.
