WHAT: LG xboom Grab by will.i.am. DESCRIPTION: This is a beaut portable Bluetooth speaker that gets going as soon as you’ve downloaded the app and pushed one button, giving out warm, balanced, bass-forward sound whose engineering has been approved by music artist will.i.am. There’s a certain lack of muddiness – as though some kind of mastering were happening as each track passed through it.

We played the Editor’s newly crafted “sci-fi lullaby” just posted on YouTube recently, and every nuance, every reverb, every audio Easter Egg, gets the recognition it deserves says he (we’re still picking up on a few clever nuggets as we tune in and type).

The Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2, Eurythmics, Tori Amos, Art of Noise – all feature in said track and all pass the quality sound test through the xboom so it’s not just good for bass tracks – it pretty much flatters genres across the board.

This speaker is clearly tuned for everyday listening rather than just volume. You wouldn’t take it to the house party to brag about a new track you’re currently streaming. But you’d bring it to the beach, the picnic, wherever smooth grooves and good vibes are encouraged. The rugged, IP67 design and handy strap make it ideal for travel or outdoor use, while battery life easily lasts a full day. Plus, it’s water and dust resistant, supposedly having passed seven military-standard tests (and will.i.am would likely have asked for the bar to have been raised high!). RRP: $229. AVAILABLE FROM: Electronic outlets including Betta and Bing Lee.

WHAT: The Brilliant Collection by Motorola x Swarovski. DESCRIPTION: You don’t often get mashes as brilliant as this. Smartphone giant Motorola has put its heavy metal to the test, to see if it could stand up to the dare and dazzle that is the Swarovski brand. And the results make The Brilliant Collection worthy of its title. The partnership sees Swarovski crystals placed by hand on the Motorola razr 60’s 3D quilted body, managing to catch the light at every angle and transform the already fab flip phone into an altogether more striking statement.

As if that’s not spectacularly splendid enough, there’s a set of matching moto buds ‘loop’ that feature an open-ear design, allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings while enjoying crystal clear sound. Sorry, we mean crystal clear sound (and for this the two brand veterans team up with a third, Bose). So that’s a third great reason to want, want, want. RRP: Motorola razr 60 flip phone, $1,499; moto buds loop, $399. AVAILABLE FROM: Harvey Norman exclusively.

WHAT: The SanDisk Creator Phone Solid State Drive. DESCRIPTION: What’s lightweight, useful, aesthetically pleasing, and has excellent memory? Answer: SanDisk Creator Phone SSD. Its USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface delivers impressive speeds of around 950–1000 MB/s for both reading and writing, making it ideal for recording and storing large 4K video files directly from your phone without bogging down performance. Files transfer fast, plus something genius called ‘MagSafe compatibility’ lets it magnetically attach to supported iPhones, keeping your rig clean and convenient during shoots, and it also works well with Android (which most of us in the office use), all thanks to an included ring adapter. Included is the said magic magnetic ring that you simply stick onto your phone (or phone case) so the SSD can magnetically attach to it. The compact, lightweight design is dust/water resistant, making it practical for field work. The perfect SDD for content creators. RRP: $259. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality electronic outlets like JB Hi-Fi.

WHAT: Reolink Atlas Security Camera and Solar Panel 2. DESCRIPTION: The Altas security camera is the ultimate gift for anyone who values peace of mind year-round. The device’s big 20,000 mAh battery and impressive Solar Panel 2’s 6-watt solar charging makes for a compelling “set-and-forget” solution for outdoor surveillance. In fact, the Atlas boasts up to 540 days of battery life on a single charge, and runs indefinitely with just an hour of sunlight a day. As for clarity, the Atlas has this in spades, providing sharp 2K video that’s usually enough to capture useful details — faces, licence plates, movement — and its smart motion detection helps reduce false alarms by distinguishing between people, vehicles, and other motion.

Its pre-recording feature captures a few seconds before motion is triggered, and is particularly handy to catch what leads up to an event — often crucial if someone loiters outside before actual motion. With its wireless design and solar charging combined, this means installation is flexible as you don’t need wiring. The solar panel does need to be wired to the camera though. Still, it means you can pretty much pop this beauty anywhere. We’ve test-driven the product and can vouch that even night vision delivers full-colour clarity in ultra-low light. Quick, smart and very handsome in design. What more could you want from a security device? RRP: $229. AVAILABLE FROM: reolink.com/au.

This little cutie is at ‘Forest School’, courtesy of Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia and its dedicated donators.

WHAT: The Opportunity to Adopt an Orangutan! DESCRIPTION: Looking for a Christmas gift that’s truly unforgettable? Why not give the gift of saving a species? This festive season, Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia is inviting Australians to symbolically adopt an orangutan on behalf of a loved one – a meaningful present that gives back in the most powerful way. Orangutans are our closest relatives, sharing 97% of our DNA, yet they’re on the brink of extinction. Every year, their rainforest homes in Borneo shrink due to deforestation, fires, and the illegal pet trade, leaving many young orangutans orphaned and in desperate need of care.

BOS Australia supports the world’s largest orangutan rescue and rehabilitation program, providing rescued babies with food, medical treatment, and access to ‘orangutan school’ where they learn the survival skills their mothers would have taught them.

To date, 549 orangutans have graduated and been safely released back into the wild. By adopting an orangutan through BOS Australia for as little as $20 a month (or the cost of a cup of coffee a week), your Christmas gift directly funds this life-saving work. Adoptions help provide food, shelter, and round-the-clock care for hundreds of orangutans currently in rehabilitation, plus long-term protection for over 485,000 hectares of forest. Each adoption comes with a personalised certificate and updates on the orangutan you’re helping to support – a gift that touches hearts while protecting an entire species.

And if adoption isn’t the right fit, there’s another way to spread the love. The adorable 2026 BOS Australia orangutan calendar is now available for just $20, packed with beautiful images of orangutans and a daily reminder of the impact your support makes. This Christmas, swap the ordinary for the extraordinary. Adopt an orangutan or pick up the 2026 calendar for someone you love, and give the ultimate gift: hope for the future of these incredible great apes. RRP: $20.00 p/m. AVAILABLE FROM: orangutans.com.au.

WHAT: Le Black Création 258 Brut, 750ml, ABV 12.5%. DESCRIPTION: This is one of the last of the bottles of liquor that we sampled in reviewing for this here gift guide and that is because we knew it would be good, but wanted it to be great chilled nicely. Indeed, it was the perfect bottle of bubbles to open at the end of a hard working day and to celebrate a job well done. Le Black Création 258 is a proper Champagne brut blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier – aged for four years on lees – yeast cells left in after the second fermentation – leaving it with fine bubbles, and a vibrant taste. It’s made by Maison Lanson, a historic house that has been making Champagnes since 1760. We sensed notes of citrus, apple and even stone fruit, rounded out with almondy after-taste. A very nice blend, actually. RRP: $68. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality liquor outlets including BWS and Dan Murphy’s.

WHAT: Join Starfleet Today! Metal Poster. DESCRIPTION: Even if you’re not a fan of Star Trek, or don’t know anything about the series, this cool stainless steel poster makes a fine post-feminist statement. Its generous enough sizing of 32cm width by 45cm height makes it a bright but not-too-invasive addition to any room, perhaps even the study. We think it’s far cooler than those beige ‘you can make it’ prints.

A timely statement since Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2026.

The stainless steel is 3.5mm thick and full poster weight comes in at an impressive 0.7 kilos. It features a magnetic back, so actually it’s great for the fridge, too! RRP: $49.95. AVAILABLE FROM: displate.com in gloss or matte finish.

WHAT: Little Giant Barossa Shiraz 2022, 750ml, ABV 14.5%. DESCRIPTION: Little Giant Wine is predominantly crafted from premium fruit grown in vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. Which is a lot of good land to get the best grape pickings! The wines are hand-crafted and made with minimal additions and preservatives so as to retain the authentic, bright, character-filled flavours of the grapes – all picked early in the morning so as to retain freshness.

We put this bottle of Barossa Shiraz to the test and found it to be more uplifting than your average black grape and, yes, most definitely, blissfully, continually drinkable.

We especially love the hints of plum, red licorice, and chocolate and mocha characters. To make things feel even better, it’s good to know that the good folk that create this good drop – South Australian winemaking group, Fourth Wave Wine – work with wildlife rescue organisation, WIRES. Part proceeds from sales of Little Giant wines will go towards helping WIRES who then help thousands of wombats that have suffered from bushfires, skin infections, vehicle collisions and other causes of injury. RRP: $19.99. AVAILABLE FROM: Major liquor retailers nationally including Dan Murphy’s

WHAT: Modelrock Lip Butter. DESCRIPTION: We love our lip butters as they tend to give a softer, more natural finish — less waxy, if you know what we mean. These new lip butters from Modelrock work more like a nourishing treatment rather than a simple barrier, “seal-in-moisture” balm, which is exactly what you expect from a “butter” formula. The brand uses plant-derived butters/oils rather than petroleum-based waxes. They are delicious but because lip butters tend to absorb more rather than sitting heavily on the lip surface, you might find you need to re-apply more often. A good excuse to get it in various shades, then, with available varieties like ‘Cafe Latte’, ‘Raspberry Pop’, and ‘Very Cherry’, pictured above. RRP: $18.00 per 15ml tube. AVAILABLE FROM: modelrocklashes.com.

WHAT: Darrell Lea ‘Make Your Own Rocklea Road’ Kit. DESCRIPTION: This is a nifty last-minute gift for the crafty person in your life, or something to give the kids so as they’re kept preoccupied while us adults get on with hosting and toasting the festive season. Famous Australian chocolatiers Darrell Lea have delivered their first ‘Make Your Own Rocklea Road’ kit – packed with two blocks of smooth milk chocolate, coconut-coated marshmallows, crunchy roasted peanuts, leaving space for your own festive touches. Taking a break from the card-writing and gift-wrapping this week, we got into trying to make our own Rocklea Road, adding extra nuts like cashews and toasted almonds and while it may not have looked exactly like DL’s Rocklea Road, it ended up tasting very gourmet. See what rocky magic you or the kids can come up with! RRP: $26, 484grams. AVAILABLE FROM: Supermarkets including Coles, Woolworths and IGA, or direct from the Darrell Lea website.

WHAT: The Joy of Birdwatching by Lonely Planet. DESCRIPTION: Our editor has recently been saying that he wants to get into something new like birdwatching. He says the birds come up to the office verandah, flying towards him almost, like real 3D. Lol. If you consider yourself a bit of a birdwatcher (and not necessarily just after having smoked some weed) you’ll truly appreciate this beautiful coffee table book, The Joy of Birdwatching. It’s comprehensive and beautifully laid-out – compiling 60 wonderful ‘birding experiences’ around the world.

Each of the 60 entries includes a profile of a particular bird (sometimes a bird-populated location) and details on how to get there, what makes the location special, when to visit, and what to expect. In Australia, for example, did you realise you could hear lyre birds singing in the back forests of Victoria? Mainly the female birds, but in winter, for six to eight weeks, the males will be putting in as much vocal effort. Bird lovers will love the prose. Think a writing style that sets the scenery, goes deep into birdsong, observes each feathered creature’s behaviour. There are maps, practical trip-planning advice, and “don’t miss” pointers. Speaking of which, the editor’s outside right now, pointing at a flock of cockatoos supposedly heading towards him. We better go help. RRP: $45. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality book retailers like booktopia.com.au

WHAT: Brown Brothers Orange Prosecco Spritz and Yuzu Lemon Prosecco Spritz, 750ml, ABV 8.5%. DESCRIPTION: Two great sparklings that are bright, effervescent twists on the classic Prosecco – and tailor-made for the Australian summer. The orange varietal blends lively bubbles with juicy orange and a touch of aromatic bitters, giving it a kind of aperitivo vibe – tangy and subtly bitter. But it’s the Yuzu Lemon Prosecco Spritz that really has our tastebuds tingling – a delicious drink that is bursting with citrus character. Aromatic yuzu brings an exotic touch and helps bring out other notes of mandarin, grapefruit and lemon, all the while seeing this Prosecco maintaining its lively bubbles. At around 8.5% ABV each, these are lower in alcohol than many wines, which adds to their easy-drinking appeal. RRP: $20 a bottle. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality liquor outlets. For more information visit brownfamilywines.com.au.

WHAT: Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 2024, 750ml, ABV 12.5%. DESCRIPTION: Have you noticed everyone is suddenly booking holidays to Italy? Delve deeper and you’ll note folks are heading to quainter towns and villages (known as paesi) and not the typical hotspots like Florence or Rome. This might have something to do with these regional areas offering a more genuine experience of Italian life than the big cities do. If you can’t make it north, drop into your local bottlo’ and pick up a bottle of their Pinot Grigio.

It’s the benchmark by which all other ‘dry-style’ Pinot Grigio’s are measured. Seriously.

The fruit is harvested in early September (Italian autumn) and as the crates arrive into the winery, the team separates the skins from the must to prevent any hint of colour. The must is then fermented for two weeks at a relatively warm 18°C then stored in steel tanks, leaving a delicate white wine with a shimmering hue that boasts summer aromas of crisp green apple and pear, citrus zest and a hint of peach. All that’s left to say, really, is salute! RRP: $22.00, 750ml bottle. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality liquor outlets including Dan Murphy’s.
