Having recently seen actress Amanda Seyfried on the big screen in The Housemaid, and then seeing her for the first time on DVD only last night – in a remarkable film called Boogie Woogie (2011) – we’ve realised that (a) she’s ageless, and (b) she’s a classic for the ages, oh, and (c) she’s very cool/classy/cultured and seemingly uncluttered. We love Amanda’s looks, we love Amanda’s gestures. Even on the red carpet she doesn’t seem to be there for all the other reasons the others are.
Here are just half a dozen things we love about Amanda Seyfried.
01. That pivotal role recent cinema fan favourite The Housemaid
If an actor’s credence is to be determined by his/her/their range, than Amanda Seyfried’s varied expression of emotion and action in The Housemaid is like a mini masterclass for all actors, right there, on screen, free, and telling you like it is, or might well be, or sure as hell can sometimes feel like.
02. That unmistakable voice
Ethereal, emotional, instantly recognizable. Whether she’s singing in Mamma Mia! or delivering quiet dialogue, her voice does half the acting for her.
03. A diverse range without trying too hard
Amanda can go from bubbly (Mean Girls) to haunting (Les Misérables), to deeply unsettling (Jennifer’s Body, The Dropout) without ever feeling like she’s “performing” for awards.
04. Those big, observant eyes; the greater expressiveness
Amanda’s eyes deserve their own IMDb page. She can communicate fear, tenderness, humour, or heartbreak with just one look, and in mere seconds. There ought to be thesis papers at universities devoted to the study of Amanda Seyfried’s eyes, from pupil to retina, and governments ought to offer grants to the continued study of them.
05. And yet a low-key, un-Hollywood vibe
In a Jane Austin-ish meets glorious blonde manga manner, Amanda gives off “horse girl who reads fantasy novels and just happens to be famous” vibes. Refreshingly normal, self-aware and not overly polished. If ever over-polished (say, Mean Girls), she’s in Chanel and simply born to be more elegant than you, sweetie.
06. She takes interesting risks
Indie films, kooky roles, morally complicated characters, this fledgling thespian doesn’t play it safe, and it pays off. Amanda’s choices are often more interesting than obvious.
A BONUS THING, RING-A-DING-DING!
Accidental comedy queen!
Amanda Seyfried’s comedic timing is sneakily excellent. Karen Portia Smith in Clueless could have easily have been one-note – albeit one reliant on top-notch couture, but Amanda made her iconic, quotable, and weirdly lovable. We’re going to love watching her grow into an talented, elegant, well-remembered, beautiful actress for the ages. Or actor if you prefer. She herself probably hasn’t got the time for silly pronouns. There’s more important work to be done.
