Enjoy a brief getaway at a Tiny Away home; this year’s to-do destination: a Jarrah Valley Escape

While the hospitality business, Tiny Away, boasts a name that is a little on the cutesie side, their business is doing very strongly, all thanks to local West Australians wanting smaller, more affordable, easy-to-organise staycations during the hotter months of summer, rather than having to lug luggage about from airport to airport.
Tiny Away offer a series of stunning ‘mini houses’ across Western Australia – compact and neat and tidy “homes on wheels”, each one constructed from sustainable materials and doing their bit for the environment by featuring solar panels for energy, rainwater collection tanks for showers, and even waterless compost toilets.
You wouldn’t believe all the amenities that fit into one Tiny Away home, in fact. Even the fridge is packed with stacks of fresh fruit, cheeses, bread, and a bottle of something delicious.

Last year, my partner Ben and I experienced a stay in a Tiny Away house tucked at the back of a grand farm in Greenbushes, half an hour out of Bunbury. Despite it being a hot 40-degree weekend, we kept nice and cool in our fab li’l holiday accommodation, complete with air-con, mini fridge filled with drinks, and just enough room to move so as to not feel claustrophobic.
This summer, we thought we’d try a Tiny Away Jarrah Valley Escape – a tiny-house holiday rental nestled on a private property in Bedfordale / Jarrah Valley, just 40 minutes southeast of Perth.
The property is run by fabulously friendly couple, Yvette and Brett, who treat you less as a guest and more like a trusted relative or good ol’ mate.

A glorious platter of goodness prepared by hostess with the mostest, Yvette. Thank you!
The retreat is a thoughtfully designed tiny house surrounded by Jarrah and Marri trees, with a focus on peaceful nature immersion; think birds tweeting, starry skies, and an expansive outdoor area complete with barbeque, boutique bar, and a garden space.
Yvette ad Brett actually got married on the premises and at the time ensured the place was equipped for great hospitality – hence a stay here means guests are also hooked up to a fab little light show, music via Bluetooth, and drinks at the ‘Bullshit Bar’ if they so desire. We couldn’t help ourselves and just had to say yes to a bevvy with our good hosts, discovering that we had a lot more in common than most city-versus-country folk might!

Our first afternoon saw us enjoying gin cocktails as the sun was about to set, before getting ready for dinner at the local pub – the cheekily named ‘The Last Drop’, a leftover from the town’s early Elizabethan settlers. It’s a lovely brewery surrounded by large, rustic grounds, and not too far from our Tiny Away home.
After a fair bit of driving that day, and a bit of socialising, it was great to back ‘home’, stretch out and sleep in the comfy queen-size bed. Tiny Away gives travelers a chance to sleep amid the most amazing natural environments, otherwise closed off to traditional accommodation such as hotels or motels.

And they fit in plenty of amenities for such a humble-sized space, including said bed as well as a kitchenette stacked with microwave, hot plate, toaster and kettle, plus a table and chairs setting, ours conveniently located outside of the tiny house so as we could enjoy a little extra space. We got to enjoy a hearty breakfast the next day, and even our pet Chihuahua, Ringo had a few pieces of bacon before dashing off to see what nooks and crannies he could venture to on this big property.

Spot little Ringo arriving for brekky!
A stay at Tiny Away’s Jarrah Valley Escape is ideal for couples or solo travellers looking to slow down the pace and get in touch with nature again. Forget the hassles of overseas accommodation and flight booking and get thee online to book yourself a fi ne little staycation at a Tiny Away property, starting with this great place first.

In terms of booking and cost, nightly rates vary by season (and booking channel), but pricing starts around the equivalent of AU$290 per night for two adults. And for how generously the mini fridge is stocked, and how wonderfully hospitable the land-holders are, this is excellent value.
Cheers to a local getaway that averts the usual travelling hassles.
