THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Stunning anime and a story that’ll tug at the heartstrings in new series ‘Witch Hat Atelier’ streaming on Crunchyroll

For fans and followers of anime, streaming channel Crunchyroll is a godsend. The popular platform dedicated almost entirely to anime, offering thousands of series and films, often with episodes released shortly after they air in Japan.

Crunchyroll is widely considered one of the biggest global hubs for anime, featuring both subtitled and dubbed content.

One particular anime series I’m quite fond of is Witch Hat Atelier which provides and enchanting viewer experience thanks to its pop-up book aesthetic. It really is a magical world to delve into.

Based on Kamome Shirahama’s beloved manga, the series follows Coco, a girl who dreams of magic in a world where it is said to be an innate gift, not something necessaril learnt.

What immediately stands out is the visual craftsmanship. The animation has a soft ‘storybook’ look to it, capturing the intricate, hand-drawn feel that made the original work so celebrated.

There’s a deliberate pacing to both the visuals and storytelling, allowing moments of wonder to breathe rather than rushing from plot point to plot point.

Story-wise, the series thrives on its sense of discovery. Coco’s journey into magic is less about spectacle and more about curiosity, creativity and consequence. In the first episode, for example, she is a normal child but her dreams make way for fantastical scenes – more specifically, she dreams of being a witch.  But in a world where only witches can cast magic, they must avoid being seen by ordinary people while casting.

The first episode hooks you in right away, even as it explores concepts of loss, grief and self-doubt. In this sense, the series features undertones of darkness beneath its whimsical surface, giving the story emotional weight without losing its sense of charm.

Having lost a close member of the family, I can really relate to the themes of this series.

If there’s a drawback, it’s that the gentle pacing may not appeal to viewers expecting fast-paced fantasy action. However, for those wanting to get lost in something more meditative, Witch Hat Aterlier is the perfect magical medium.

Though I’ve only seen two episodes so far of this series, I’ll be glued to my tablet waiting for ep. three and beyond to drop.
