Going Greener: Today is International Day of Plant Health but what exactly does it entail?

Every year on the 12th of May, the world marks the International Day of Plant Health — a United Nations initiative that highlights why healthy plants matter to people, economies and of course to the planet. \

Created as a lasting legacy of the International Year of Plant Health 2020, the day reminds us that protecting plants is essential for food security and environmental health.

Plants do far more than decorate our gardens. They produce 98 percent of the oxygen we breathe and provide 80 percent of the food we eat. Yet every year, up to 40 percent of crops are lost to pests and diseases. These losses threaten farmers’ livelihoods, increase food prices and make it harder to feed growing populations.

This is where plant biosecurity plays a vital role. In simple terms, plant biosecurity is like border protection and health screening for plants. It involves monitoring, preventing and responding to harmful pests and diseases before they spread across farms, forests and ecosystems.

Strong biosecurity systems help keep food supplies stable and protect international trade. They also preserve biodiversity by stopping invasive species from damaging native plants and habitats. International plant health standards support safer trade while helping countries achieve better production, better nutrition, a better environment and better lives.

For busy consumers, the message is straightforward: healthy plants mean healthy people, stronger economies and a safer environment. Protecting plant health is not only a farming issue — it is a global responsibility that affects everyone, every day.
