Dp Dermaceuticals: just ten minutes of soothing light therapy a night does absolute wonders for the face

The first time I tried LED light therapy was at a cosmetics clinic in Singapore whilst on a medivac media famil. The sensation felt wonderful, reminding me of days when I used to lay relaxing under a solarium, only the light therapy was now benefitting my facial features and skin.

I actually said to the clinician overlooking the procedure that this would be amazing to be able to do at home (back then there were no at-home packages) and wouldn’t you know it, a decade and a half down the line and here we are enjoying our own LED light therapy treatments on the comfort of our own sofas.

Recently, a package arrived from Dp Dermaceuticals, containing a flexible silicone face mask that wraps around the the head with its easy Velcro straps, connected to it a rechargeable battery controller with just the one simple button. The package also came with a USB C to USB A connector that quickly charges up the mask, making it ready for use.

When I switched the controller on, the inside of the mask suddenly saw red diodes lighting up (I counted 66 of them), the mask suddenly looking like something out of a sci-fi movie. Indeed, once the mask was on, my partner told me I looked something like a cross between a hero out of Doom Patrol and Jack Black’s Nacho Libre. So I asked him to take a photograph. And he’s kind of right!

On a serious note, of course, here is a little information about LED light therapy for you.

LED stand for light-emitting diodes, and it’s a subtle form of light that does wonders in improving the skin. Indeed, LED therapy helps treat various conditions and concerns such as acne, wrinkles and fine lines, dark under-eyes and puffiness, right through to the more serious likes of psoriasis. The therapy is available in different types, including red light LED therapy and blue light LED therapy, and sometimes these are used in combination. But for a first-time user, I’d strongly recommend the Dp Dermaceuticals LED face mask which uses red light therapy.

Four weeks use of this nifty device and I can honestly say my face is looking younger, fresher, fuller and, I’ll say it, rather fabulous.

The technique itself is simple and relaxing. I’ve already explained how easy it is to use, and all you have to do is lay there, either upright or horizontally (on your couch, a bed, wherever you feel more comfortable) as the diodes do their magic.

Each session lasts ten minutes but feels so soothing and relaxing, you’ll want to stay there under the glow for longer. Fortunately, an automatic timers switches the device off when the appropriate session length is over. Once in a while, I cheated and switched the controller to ‘on’ again for just a couple of minutes more, blissed out by the reddish glow and comfortable in my own physical and mental cocoon. But only a couple of times I did this for I thought it best to stick to the beauty rules.

My pet chihuahua/terrier puppy Ringo wondering what magic his master is mustering.

It made me wonder, can you ever use too much of it? Ten minutes at a time is the optimum recommended period, and the manufacturers suggest four-to-five days a week usage. Adding a couple of days a week to this suggested regime, and I discovered brilliant, positive results.

You certainly don’t need the full seven days of the week worth of treatments as four or five per week has great enough benefits alone. Besides, you’ll probably want to be free on weekends to go out again and see the positive reactions on people’s faces of your wonderful new glow.

A space-age looking device that’s actually very soothing and certainly progressive in its many positive results.

Another question that often gets asked is can I use the Dp Dermaceuticals LED face mask regularly while also receiving other facial treatments? The fast answer is yes. Indeed, I was halfway through a series of face treatments courtesy of an amazing new beauty brand, Rejuran, My clinician, actually a doctor and founder of cosmetics outlets Youth Lab, Dr Kate Jameson, said there is no problem in combining treatments like Rejuran with LED face masks. Indeed, the Rejuran procedure utilises a little LED light therapy to sooth its relatively intense process (60 needle points to the face that procedure takes… but more about that treatment in a separate review).

Suffice to say, I didn’t want to mix treatments too much so in the four weeks between my first and second Rejuran treatment is when I really focused on using the Dp Dermaceuticals LED face mask, and that’s when I noticed the great, aforementioned results.

Even in the third week, I noticed fine lines looking finer, the slight darkness under my eyes starting to fade, and general improvement in my face’s skin tone. Add to this the post-haze bliss I sensed after each LED session, and I cannot fault this product at all.

The small type in the manuals say that this particular light therapy uses a mix of rejuvenating red (633nm) and near-infrared (830nm) light. The ‘nm’ currency refers to ‘nanometers’ of red light waves). These amounts are non-invasive, ensuring your face is safe, while being just enough to stimulate cellular repair, hence all the great results mentioned.

Other people who have tried LED light therapy say they have received a variety of other benefits, such as face feeling plumper, more hydrated, refreshed and glowing. One study by the brand found that 95% of recipients said their skin was brighter and plumper, 98% agreed skin felt firmer, and 96% insisted fine lines were less visible. That’s a lot of high 90s to be impressed by.

LED face light therapy is clinically proven to boost collagen and elastin production, as well as treating redness, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, pigmentation, sun damage and dehydrated skin. You can even use post micro-needling treatments to reduce downtime and inflammation, and promote circulation to accelerate healing.

Combination therapy for the skin – what more could you want?

Not bad for 54… Four weeks after using Dp Dermaceuticals LED light therapy and feeling pretty good. I’ll definitely keep up the regime.
