Mind The Gap: A boardgame the whole family can enjoy that seriously encourages cross-generational gameplay

There are times – on games night – when you’re at a crossroads at what to play, simply because there’s a variety of age groups around the table and you’re not sure if dad will get Trivial Pursuit 2000s, if mum might be offended by a round of Ganjaland, or if the kids would even know what a Scrabble board was.

That’s why it’s refreshing to see a boardgame that not only appeals to various generations but is literally about various generations.

Mind The Gap is a great multi-generation trivia game published by Solid Roots that brings Boomers, Gen X’ers, Millennials and Gen Zedders together in a fun, nostalgic contest. Best of all, the premise is pretty simple so that everybody can understand the rules.

Players form up to four teams – with a mix of generations in each team absolutely encouraged. Each player then rolls a die, and makes their way around a board by answering trivia questions drawn from five decks categorised by generation.

The trivia spans familiar pop-culture categories, including television and film, music, headlines, slang/slogans, and general pop culture.

When a team lands on a ‘challenge’ space, marked with a star, someone from that team must act out a scene, hum a well-known tune, or dance to a classic move — giving the game a lively, immersive and fun performative twist.

The objective of the game is simple but engaging: the first team to correctly answer and perform their way all around the board and return to their starting point wins.

With Christmas coming up, and lots of family get-togethers sure to ensue, this is the ideal boardgame to bring out when charades has gotten hackneyed.

If your experience with the game becomes anything like ours, after a few rounds the house will start looking like a dorm room and feeling like a disco!

There’s also a deluxe edition that adds 25 extra head-to-head challenge cards and custom player pieces, giving more playability and variety, but we’ll give that a go another time.
