A trusted name we’ve turned to for years for choccie-packed Kris Kringles and last-minute gift ideas

I remember when Darrell Lea used to have their iconic store on George Street in Sydney – the chocolatier’s yummilicious goods shining bright from the windows of that grand Victorian building on the corner of King and George. I would drop in once and week and stock up on choccies for the seven days ahead. Sadly, the store is no longer but the brand itself has only gotten bigger and bigger.

Darrell Lea has been cheering us up with their good for a solid 98 years and become especially popular at Christmas time. Making our list of quality last-minute gift ideas are their Coconut Ice Slice which taste just like home-made did when we had time to make our own; the delicious Caramel Snow Slice with just the right amount of sweetened condensed milk to juxtapose the good dark chocolate that wraps it; and of course the Nougat Christmas Pudding – a fat little ball of desiccated coconut, gooey nougat, wrapped in milk chocolate.

For those moments when the guests have gone and you just want to kick back on the couch and catch a bit of HBO or Netflix, there are packets of Christmas Liquorice and Crunchy Chocolate Balls to munch on, or go old-school and indulge in a box of Liquorice Allsorts like nanna and pop used to treat you.
As for the ever-popular Rocklea Road, you can now try making your own – which we’ve included in our Christmas Gift Guide here. For our own version of Rocklea Road we threw in cashews and roasted almonds, lending it a gourmet touch. If only it looked as good as it tasted! DIY packs are a fun thing for the kids to get into, too.
That ol’ corner store may not be there any longer, but you will notice the brand’s ubiquitous presence – especially its bright Chrissy packaging – in most supermarkets including Coles, Woolworths and IGA and on the Darrell Lea website.
