The Touchless Tan: no sun, no creams, no stress and yet perfect tanning results
Growing up in Perth in the 1980s, and living just 10kms from the coast, I was very much a ‘waterbaby’. If I wasn’t at the beach catching small waves, I’d be at the local swimming pool, Beatty Park, doing swimming lessons or jumping off the diving boards of various heights. Water, sun, sand, swim – I loved it all. But when I moved from Perth to Sydney to get the journalism career going, I didn’t get to water as much as I used to. Bondi Beach? I probably went about five times in all of 15 years. Returning home to Perth, I still very rarely visit the coast, and when I do it’s to watch a sunset. So, when do I ever get a tan? Never, really.
So it was with intrigue and somewhat trepidation that I accepted an invitation to try the indoor facilities at The Touchless Tan. With studios in South Perth and Wembley, The Touchless Tan is a modern beauty facility that offers an innovative approach to achieving a sun-kissed glow with minimal fuss.
Rather than traditional technician-led spray tans, they provide fully automated, contactless spray tan experiences in private booths that you book and access easily and conveniently via their mobile app.
The studios are open 24/7, meaning you can tan at a time that suits you without needing staff present, although assistance can be arranged for first-timers if needed, thanks to owner Cassandra or a Touchless Tan assistant being on call. Fairly new to the beauty game, The Touchless Tan ticks all the right boxes. Their tanning spaces are discreet with only you and your passcode able to access your booked room (and, as said previously, at any time). Their facilities are super-clean and you even get to wear fresh foot pads for extra cleanliness. And their technology is absolutely state-of-the-art, with easy instructions provided by Ai, leaving you walking out beautifully tanned and confident.
The interior design of The Touchless Tan studios are calm and inviting with earthy tones and thoughtful finishes to enhance comfort during your visit. The real stars, though, are the tanning booths themselves: spacious, curved for easy access, and totally automated. There’s no need for reception or waiting room lounges at The Touchless Tan since you are in and out of the studio in your own time and on your own terms. In fact, tanning can be completed in under 10 minutes, with voice prompts and visual guides in each private room taking you through the process.
While there’s big tech involved, the procedure is actually very easy. First, you choose from a range of tan shades and intensities tailored to your desired result and skin tone. If you are new to indoor spray-tanning or unsure about which of The Touchless Tan’s spray tan colours will suit you best, you can take their colour quiz.
The quiz asked for my skin tone (‘olive’), and undertones (‘blue/purple’). Don’t be afraid the sound of the ‘blue/purple’ part, that’s just to provide a balance in colour somewhere between the hues of your veins (check the inside of your wrists) and the tan shade you’d like. You’ll be asked in the quiz how long you’d like to keep your tan. I picked that I want to sleep with the spray tan on and then wash it off in the morning. Ultimately, it was suggested I select the ‘Sunseeker’ shade, which leaves a nice natural look, radiant and golden-brown but not too dark.
Whatever shade you opt for, you can rest assured that all solutions are paraben-free, vegan and infused with skin-friendly ingredients. Included with every tan, too, is a Protector Primer to enhance the longevity of your result.
In terms of cost, The Touchless Tan offers great flexibility. Single sessions can be booked, or you can save money with membership packages if you tan regularly. They also run an introductory special (currently 2 sessions for $50) so that newcomers can try the service for the first (and second!) time. Memberships and pricing vary and are best viewed through their app, which you’ll need to download anyway so as to book and manage your appointments.
Overall, I was very happy with the even, natural-looking results. There was no streaking and no fuss, and I loved the convenience of just being able to shut the door behind me on my way out, leaving the machine to recalibrate itself and knowing I could make my next appointment at any time, for any time of the day or night.
With their private rooms and app-based booking procedure, The Touchless Tan experience is designed to be streamlined and as comfortable for the customer as can be. Five stars all-round, then: for convenience, for comfort, and best of all, for the nice results. As for aftercare tips, see below.

THE TOUCHLESS TAN | POST-TANNING TIPS
Make sure you keep track of when you tanned and monitor your tan as it develops and keep the following tips in mind, depending on which tan shade you have gone for:
SUNSEEKER, COASTAL & SEASPRAY CLEAR
Rinse: 6–8 hours following your spray-tan session.
Important: We recommend washing your hands and face only with cool water 20-30 minutes after tanning. For best results, blend your hands and face with a blending brush immediately following your tan. Wipe any tan from the palms of your hands with the wet wipes provided in the room.
OCEANIA RAPID
Rinse: 1–3 hours following your spray-tan session.
Important: We recommend washing your hands and face only with cool water 20-30 minutes after tanning. For best results, blend your hands and face with a blending brush immediately following your tan. Wipe any tan from the palms of your hands with the wet wipes provided in the room.
Rinse your body at 1 hour (light), 2 hours (medium), or 3 hours (dark). Do not leave on longer than 3.5 hours, as the tan may over-develop.
POST TAN TIPS
• Avoid using any soaps at your first rinse; just use water. Do not apply moisturiser until your second shower.
• After your first rinse, your tan will continue to develop and reach full depth at 24 hours.
• Keep hydrated, moisturise daily, and avoid bar soaps or cream-based body washes.
• Tip: Take note of which tan number you selected and when you rinsed to prepare for your next appointment.
