Next year’s Met Gala theme has been announced and it’s Common As Muck… or may as well be

Let’s see how many celebrity pairs will try to recreate Britney Spears’ and Justin Timberlake’s double denim look at next year’s Met Gala, the theme being ‘extraOrdinary’. Mind you, Brit and Just do look great here since these two had what we used to call star quality.
The Met Gala is usually immediately aligned with haute couture fashion. One night a year, the biggest names – from the music world, the film world, and of course the fashion world – come together to celebrate the art of dressing up, with a gala hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Outfits can often cost a celebrity up to six figures – and that’s a lot of money for dressing up on one party night.
But this year, quite possibly due to a pending global economic recession, the theme has changed drastically, the title of the theme “extraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday” hinting at all things ordinary, like double denim, moth-ridden t-shirts, ghastly hoodies, and so on.

Troye Sivan: dressed to non-impress in Calvin Klein denim on denim.
And I say, why not dress the event down during tough economic times? After all, the majority of today’s ‘new’ celebrities are pretty much common as muck. Troye Sivan? Please, as common as trade you might get with under a tree in a park on a dark balmy night in Dianella only a few years ago (talk about “party in the park”). Olivia Rodrigo? Her new Christmas single sounds like it was recorded in a back room during one of her cousin’s quinceañera celebrations. Austin Butler? Tom Holland? Even Timothée Chalamet. No major talent here, I’m afraid. Just ordinary, simple-looking folk (let alone acting), despite the occasional jhooj-y hairdo and trumped-up biopic.
Stars today are just not as aesthetically exciting as they used to be. Certainly not as glamorous. If they do ‘dress up’, it usually means dressing down – cheap; gaudy; slutty; trans-wannabe-but-insulting-to-the-original-gender-it’s-trying-to-emulate. In short, just plain trash.
An ordinary or ‘extraOrdinary’ theme is most suitable for this year’s Met Gala, then. The celebs themselves have probably noticed less money in the bank than years previous.
So I expect to see Anna Wintour in a bedazzled jacket; Troye Sivan in double shredded denim; every black rap artist in ghastly neon-bright sneakers; and the Kardashians in horrendous activewear.
Oh, I’m sorry, The Met meant for the theme to be translated ironically.

The Met Gala is scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2027, next year trading high-camp fantasy and traditional red-carpet opulence for a deep dive into elevated but mundane garments like jeans, t-shirts, hoodies and sneakers.
