Five good reasons to catch Culture Club live

Anyone who grew up in the ’80s would know ‘that strange feeling’ sensed when a Boy called George and his band, Culture Club, made it onto our television screens. Even before MTV was big, Culture Club demanded, and got, unprecedented attention for their flamboyant music videos, while radio just couldn’t get enough of them.

Culture Club went on to sell over 100 million singles and 50 million albums, and ended up having Top 10 hits in – literally – every country in the world.
Karma Chameleon… Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?… Time (Clock Of The Heart)… Miss Me Blind… It’s A Miracle… I’ll Tumble 4 Ya… Move It… The list of hits is extensive.

And then there was Boy George’s major influence on youth culture, seeing gender-bending at high-school an okay thing to do – way before anyone talked about ‘Safe Schools’.

Anyways, cutting to the chase, Culture Club have reformed and are set to tour the world, kicking the shenanigans off with their first gig in Perth, followed by other Australian capitals.

01. THERE’S A TRUCKLOAD OF GOOD MUSIC FOR THEM TO PLAY
The plethora of hit singles in the Culture Club discography is huuuuuge, so even if they played just 15 songs, every one of them will be a good ‘ol familiar number. But that’s not to say everything will be retro. The boys are promising different arrangements for several of the bigger hits, plus they’ll be playing new tracks from their forthcoming album ‘Tribes’.

02. THE GANG’S ALL HERE…
Unlike most reunion tours where certain key members are replaced with codgers we’ve never heard of or seen, Culture Club will be touring with all original members in place. Old-school fans will know them each by name: frontman Boy George, guitarist/keyboardist Roy Hay, bassist Mikey Craig, and drummer Jon Moss.

03. THERE’S STORIES TO BE TOLD
Anyone who has read any of Boy George’s memoirs will know the guy knows how to tell a good story. Tall tales… and true! Fingers crossed George will give us a bit of behind-the-scenes goss between songs when he’s in show-and-tell element on stage.

04. THERE’LL BE CAMP SUPPORT ACTS
Dannii Minogue will perform a “one off” show in her home town of Melbourne, in support of Culture Club, and ABBA-cover band Bjorn Again will perform in Sydney and Brisbane. Aussie popsters Kids In The Kitchen will support at all four Australian shows (Change In Mood, anyone?).

05. FIRST IN, BEST-DRESSED…
Australia is the first stop of the band’s tour (Perth, to be exact) so the guys will be fresh-as and will deliver a gig that is either (a) slick, sharp and polished as can be, or (b) perhaps rawer, with a “jam”-like vibe. Either way, you can brag to the rest of the world that us Aussies saw them first…

A new Culture Club album ‘Tribes’ is expected to release in a couple of months.
