Following an announcement earlier this week that Madonna will pay tribute to fellow music royalty Prince at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, a petition has been raised on the website change.org, arguing against Madge being the only artist to pay homage to the Artist Formerly Known As.
“We cannot let Madonna be the main and only artist tributing Prince during the 2016 Billboard Awards,” reads the petition. “He is more than worthy of a better choice as a main performer. Please sign and share this petition so that we can get a proper tribute. Timing is tight. Spread the word.”
So far the petition has just over 2,000 signatures.
The Billboard Music Awards will air on May 22, and already locked in is a star-studded lineup of performers including Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, P!nk, Demi Lovato, Perth’s Troye Sivan, and possibly even the Weeknd.
On a retro bent, the Go-Go’s will reform for a performance, and Celine Dion will be on hand to receive an Icon Award.
While some online punters are against Madonna paying tribute exclusively, fan publications such as Idolator highlight the fact that Prince and Madonna have been on par in the pop icon stakes, and that the pair worked extensively together on Madonna’s Like A Prayer LP.
Some of the other artists suggested to pay tribute by the nay-sayers are Lenny Kravitz, Sheila E, and Chaka Khan. Antonino Tati
