For so long maligned as cinema’s poor cousin, television has finally come of age. Where it once was a last resort for those who couldn’t make it into the rarefied world of celluloid, the small screen now attracts the best creative talent in the entertainment industry.
Signing on for the second season of critically-acclaimed series Top Of The Lake, Nicole Kidman has become just the latest of an already growing list of film stars to have answered the siren call of prestige TV. Having started her career in the medium, Kidman’s return to the small screen has come at a time of diminished standing in the industry. But like it has for so many waning stars, it is television, rather than film, that offers the best chance at a career revival.
Fans of the series will have to wait until 2017 to see how our Nic fares in these unchartered waters. But seeing how others have gone, chances are great that she will swim rather than sink. Chris Prindiville
‘Top Of The Lake’ Season 2 will screen on Foxtel’s BBC First channel in 2017 (exact dates yet to be finalised).
