When Alanis Morissette burst onto the music scene in 1995 with her era-defining LP Jagged Little Pill, she inadvertently set the wheels in motion for a brand of music that challenged the paradigms of the female ‘pop’ star. Here was a woman who was girly and feminine in many respects, but who demanded that men pay sharper attention to what women really want; at the top of that wish-list being respect, really.
In the wake of a slew of hit singles, from the angst-ridden likes of You Oughta Know and Uninvited to lessons in humility such as Hand in My Pocket and Thank U, Morissette helped pave the way for a host of female singers who would soon too throw down the gauntlet and take up the challenge of defying traditional patriarchy.
From Avril Lavigne to Nicki Minaj, young women in music could now be simultaneously feminine and feminist and still sell records.
It’s astonishing, then, that such an iconic artist as Alanis has rarely ventured abroad to play live. Rarely to Australia, anyway. But that’s all about to change, with the announcement today that Alanis Morissette will be playing to Sydney and Melbourne audiences in January 2018 – her first time performing in Australia in almost 20 years.
Expect to hear the aforementioned songs performed in refreshing guise, along with a host of others such as You Learn, Hands Clean, Head Over Feet, and of course Ironic.
Don’t miss this once-in-two-decades opportunity to catch one of music’s finest female artists live. Antonino Tati
