Justin Timberlake has announced the release date of his new album as February 2, just two days before his scheduled performance at the US Superbowl.
A departure from his usual urban aesthetic, the album titled Man of the Woods has been described in a trailer as “Feels like mountains, trees, camp fires… like Wild West, but not”.
In the trailer, Justin struts through cornfields and snowy mountains and is pictured wrapped in traditional ponchos and sitting beside roaring fires – an everyday man supposedly pondering the meaning of life in the great outdoors.
“This album is really inspired by my son, my wife, my family, but more so than any other album I’ve ever written, where I’m from – it’s personal,” he says in a voiceover.
But while some of the music heard so far sounds of an acoustic bent, there’s still a fair bit of groove, courtesy of longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams, who describes the record already as “a smash”.
We’ll have to wait and see if the new ‘rustic’ looking and sounding Timberlake will work for fans or indeed if it ushers in a host of new followers – albeit the sort that wear trucker caps, go camping, and hunting for bears in the woods… Antonino Tati
