Fashion designer and business entrepreneur Kate Spade has died by suicide, aged 55.
Kate’s body was discovered by her housekeeper in her Park Avenue apartment, with a scarf wrapped around her neck and attached to a doorknob.
A suicide note was found next to Kate’s body. In another room, her 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix had been freshly dressed for the day.
Kate Spade was famous for her minimalist clothing design, debuting on the fashion scene in 1993 with six simple silhouettes in bold palettes.
She became known globally for her bright, colourful handbags, opening 140 retail stores across the United States and 175 stores internationally.
Spade and her creative director husband, Andrew, sold the brand a decade ago and have both been quiet on the New York circuit over the past few years.
The label had only recently launched an advertising campaign featuring (as ambassadors) actress Laura Dern, Saturday Night Live comic Sasheer Zamata, and Rookie blog founder Tavi Gevinson.
