Mardi Gras theme for 2019 announced… it’s ‘Fearless’
The theme of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2019 has been announced, and it’s short and sweet but potent. ‘Fearless’ is the theme, with Mardi Gras representatives saying the word was chosen for its reflection of LGBTI activism of the past and a call to action for the future.
The festival kicks off on Friday 15 February and runs through to Sunday 3 March, culminating of course with the infamous Mardi Gras Parade and official Mardi Gras after-party.
The Mardi Gras 2019 program is packed with more than 100 community events, theatrical productions, music gigs, dance parties, along with family-focused activities.
‘Fearless’ was chosen for its reflection of LGBTI activism of the past and a call to action for the future.
Said Mardi Gras CEO Terese Casu, “We invite everyone to join Mardi Gras this season to celebrate diversity and creativity, and to champion the fearless voices within our community. Being fearless is more than making a lot of noise, it’s also about acknowledging a person’s own vulnerability, and being able to express who they are, even if it’s not bold.”
A new feature of 2019’s festival will be Mardi Gras Central, which will see the transformation of The Seymour Centre into a hub of events, including live music, comedy and performance art.
