THE NEW RETRO-MODERN

Happy World Cocktail Day!

It’s unfortunate that World Cocktail Day should fall on a Monday this year, today being that very day. Having it fall on a Friday or Saturday would have been so much better. But you do know what they say about hair of the dog…

‘The Balance and Columbian Repository’ defined a cocktail as “a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters…”

May 13 marks the publication date of the first definition of a ‘cocktail’. This was back in 1806 when a U.S. journal – surreptitiously titled The Balance and Columbian Repository – defined a cocktail as “a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters” in response to a reader’s question.

Today, any drink that contains two or more ingredients can be considered a cocktail, but of course one of the ingredients ought to be alcohol.

Otherwise you’re moving into mocktail territory… and who wants to bother with that stuff?

Bottoms up, then!
