Australian Women in Music Awards scheduled for October; second year running

Christine Anu: “The AMWAs provide unprecedented opportunities for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters.” The awards recognise the work of Australian women in the music and surrounding industries.

The Australian Women in Music Awards (AMWAs) will return for its second year on the 8th and 9th of October, and this year looks set to be even bigger than last.

Last year’s event saw industry leaders and emerging Australian icons descend on the Brisbane Powerhouse and come away triumphant, with artists including Amy Shark, Jen Cloher and Ngaiire all taking home awards.

The event will also see forums being hosted, each aimed at igniting conversation and sparking change.

This year’s list of honorees, nominees and guests will be revealed soon, but in the meantime we can tell you of some new categories including a Music Journalist Award, Excellence in Image Making, a Diversity in Music Award and, on the genre front, Excellence in Classical Music.

The event will also see forums being hosted, each aimed at igniting conversation and sparking change. These include Visibility in Hip Hop – Women on the Front Line, The Art of Rebellion – The Intersection of Music and Politics, and Image Making – The Changing Face of Music.

So lots to talk about; and plenty to tune into.
