Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic has official release date; Aussie actor Austin Butler to play the King of Rock
Baz Luhrmann’s biopic about music legend Elvis Presley has officially been given a release date’, set to open in cinemas on June 23, 2022.
Even bigger news is that Luhrmann has found his lead man to play The King of Rock: Australian actor Austin Butler.
The film will be set across two decades of Elvis’ life including his poverty-struck upbringing, that magnificent rise to fame and, presumably, the tragic ending to his life. Although, knowing Luhrmann’s penchant for turning biopics into musicals, it’s not certain how the subject of death will pan out on the big screen – if indeed musical is the genre he adopts.
Even bigger news is that Luhrmann has finally found his lead man to play The King of Rock. Australian actor Austin Butler beat out a bunch of promising candidates for the role including Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Miles Teller.
Butler (pictured above, complete with Elvis-like bouffant) will star alongside Tom Hanks, who has been cast as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager for over two decades.
