A cool blend of contemporary & retro culture

WIN! One of 15 double passes to see the family comedy ‘The War with Grandpa’

The War with Grandpa is a feelgood family comedy along the genre lines of Bad Santa and Meet The Fockers – and while it seems somewhat out of whack to watch a film about a family begging to have their patriarch move in with them (esp. in this already claustrophobic Covid era), it does make for a fun escape movie.

Starring Robert De Niro as the titular grandfather, Uma Thurman as his over-caring daughter (strange, because she’s got so much going on in her life already), and Christopher Walken as De Niro’s best buddy, the cast is as credible as can get.

The story follows the feud between a kid named Peter and his grand-dad – who used to be very close up until Grandpa Jack moves in with the family and into Peter’s old room.

Hence a war between the generations ensues, with Peter and Grandpa trying to outdo each other in the pranks and foul play stakes.

While there’s nothing too new about the storyline, the domestic ups and downs of this particular family makes for some much-needed laughs.

‘The War with Grandpa’ (rated PG) is in cinemas December 3, 2020.
