Breakdancing is now an Olympic sport
After decades of being treated as the leisurely pursuit of street kids, the art of breakdancing has now been officially designated an Olympic sport.
The International Olympic Committee made the announcement this morning, sliding breakdancing into the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
It will officially be called ‘breaking’, as it was originally dubbed by the dancers at hip-hop’s first parties in the Bronx in the 1970s.
Paris Olympic organisers have been hoping to include breaking into its schedule since initial meetings in 2018., after trials at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
