Peter Hook is a man who’s covered a lot of musical ground. Having been co-founder and bassist for Joy Division, he then went on to co-found New Order with his surviving Joy Division band mates.
It’s this last gig that pleases us most.
Peter Hook & The Light tour the world performing landmark Joy Division albums as well as classic New Order material.
Celebrating a decade of being touring, the outfit will be returning to Australia in 2022 to perform live sets of the Joy Division LPs Unknown Pleasures and Closer in full and sequential order as well as an opening set of solid New Order songs.
Released in 1979, Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division’s debut album, featuring a collection of energetic yet melancholic songs such as Disorder, Shadowplay, New Dawn Fades and She’s Lost Control.
Closer was released in 1980, two months after the suicide of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, the album oozing passion and emotional anguish with songs like Isolation, Atrocity Exhibition and Heart and Soul.
Says Hook on performing these two perennial LPs: “I never had any idea that I would play anywhere apart from Manchester. I have been asked to play all around the world and everywhere we have gone we have gotten a great reception … after denying Joy Division … to actually get the music back.”
It may not be the same without Ian, but this is as close to Joy Division mastery as we’re going to get.
