Vengaboys release fun tribute to that twisted decade in video clip for their cover of ‘1999 (I Wanna Go Back)’
We loved it when Charli XCX and Troye Sivan released their duet 1999 (I Wanna Go Back) complete with a video that took viewers back to that exact year, the pair of pop poseurs imitating pop stars of yesteryear.
But Vengaboys, who recently covered the track, have gone one better, taking a whole bunch of ’90s imagery (namely album covers) and superimposing these with some magical lip-synching.
In the clip, we see artwork by everyone from Mariah to Madonna, Air to Aphex Twin, Biggy to Bjork, Friends to the Fresh Prince, all getting a post-postmodern makeover.
In between the bastardised artworks are flashes of things we once couldn’t live without including chunky Nokia phones, Apple iMacs, braided hair and bum-bags.
