Australians are the biggest followers of true crime series a recent study reveals

A recent study has revealed Australians have a particular interest in true crime television, film and podcasts, earning an overall score of 9.85 out of 10, and topping all other countries in its investment in true crime ‘entertainment’.

TopRatedCasinos collated a list of the 20 most popular true crime series on Netflix while also following trends for true crime books, movies and podcasts, and overall scores were assigned to the countries most obsessed with true crime. 

The United Kingdom came in at number 2 with its fascination with true crime TV, while Ireland showed a huge interest in podcasts: a popularity score of 100: the highest of any country.

Since a lot of true crime television is set in the United States, it’s unsurprising that the US also ranks highly in true crime fascination (#05) while Canada’s fixation is firmly placed at #04.

One of the most popular true crime series is Inventing Anna, the documentary that follows a journalist investigating the rise and fall of Anna Delvey, the woman who fooled New York society into believing she was a millionaire heiress.   

One of Netflix’s other popular recent releases Catching Killers also proved popular in the international viewing stakes with its retelling of some of the most prolific serial killer cases from around the world.

Murder Among Mormons is a more recent hit for Netflix with its revealing look into the deadly exploits centring around the Mormon community. As an American series, the results are expected with the show most popular in the US (maximum 100/100 popularity score), followed by Canada (68/100 popularity score), and then Australia (45/100 popularity score).

Crime Scene: Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel has proved to be most popular in Ireland. This series chronicles the disturbing and peculiar death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel. It is also popular viewing in the UK (76/100 popularity score) and the US (71/100). 

Rounding out the top 10 of nations that most love true crime watching are New Zealand at #06, South Africa at #07, Brazil at #08, India at #09, and Austria at #10. Popular true crime series among these countries include American Murder: The Family Next Door, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, and Tiger King.
