Say Hello to Pantone’s Colour of the Year: Viva Magenta
For its Colour of the Year, 2023, Pantone has gone back to basics. Well, kind of back to a primary colour…
This year’s trending hue is called Viva Magenta (Code 18-1750 for true graphic aesthetes) and according to Pantone it’s a colour that “vibrates with vim and vigor”.
But before you can say “What the CMYK are they doing picking something so close to primary?”, keep in mind that Viva Magenta descends more from the red family (ie: it is closer to red than magenta, really).
Viva Magenta is meant to connote joy, self-expression, experimentation and empowerment, so apparently this one is for you, you and You!
Says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute: “In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Viva Magenta is inspired by the red [hue] of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”
You can expect to see this rather rich shade in everything from fashion to furniture, interiors to graphic design as 2023 picks up pace. And by about halfway through the year, Ikea would have caught up.
