Winners announced of the AACTA International Awards: that’s AACTA as in ‘Actor’ as in Film & Television Awards, doncha know
A whole lot of conflicting genres were up for gongs at this year’s AACTA Awards including Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, while in television Mystery Road: Origin and White Lotus: Sicily came up trumps, too.
The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced the winners for the 12th AACTA International Awards, honouring the world’s best achievements in screen excellence.
James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water took out the coveted Award for Best Film, however it was black tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin that lead this year’s film categories with three wins including Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson), Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon), and Best Screenplay (Martin McDonagh).

Notably, Australian Actress Cate Blanchett won her third International AACTA Award for Best Lead Actress in Film for her performance in Tár. Blanchett has previously received this Award for Carol (2015) and Blue Jasmine (2013). An AACTA favourite, obviously.
Elvis added two more AACTA Awards to its collection after receiving 11 at the Australian Academy’s domestic Awards in December last year. Baz Luhrmann took out Best Direction and Austin Butler was crowned Best Lead Actor.

Australian productions and talent have also triumphed on the small screen, with ABC’s Mystery Road: Origin taking home Best Drama Series and Mark Coles Smith receiving Best Lead Actor in a Series – Awards they also received at the domestic AACTA Awards. Aaron Pederson and Mark Coles Smith, who have both played Detective Jay Swan in the Mystery Road Franchise, have now both received an International AACTA Award for their portrayals.
The White Lotus: Sicily has gone back-to-back for Best Comedy Series, with season one winning at the AACTA International Awards last year. Jennifer Coolidge, who plays the often rude, always-hilarious Tanya McQuoid in the series has taken out the International AACTA Award for Best Actress.

Jennifer Coolidge steals the show in The White Lotus: Sicily.
Other notable series that were up for best comedy were Hacks, Only Murders in The Building, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and, a surprise to us, Wednesday.
