Video game museum The Nostalgia Box has moved to bigger, brighter premises in Perth
The evolution of gaming is actually quite awe-inspiring – from the simplicity of board games of the ’70s to physical video cartridges of the ’80s, CD-ROMs of the ’90s, and the instantly downloadable and streaming formats of today. It’s like science and magic combined!
The Nostalgia Box is a mini museum of sorts dedicated to the history of video gaming. It’s the only museum of its kind in Perth and it has recently moved from the cramped headquarters in Northbridge to a bigger, bolder and brighter space in West Perth’s Plaistow Mews.
Branded Australia’s first and only interactive Video Game Console Museum, The Nostalgia Box is home to an impressive collection of over 100 consoles in all their tangible glory, from the simple bouncing-block video games of the early 1970s by Atari and Telstar to the high-tech wonders of today courtesy of PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox.
Visitors can take a self-guided tour with in-depth explanations next to each console but if you ask nicely you might get a private tour from owner/director David Green, who bought the business in 2020 so as to bring it to next-level status.
There’s also a games area where you get to relive the humble joy of playing Pong, or the super-retro experience of enjoying a game of original Super Mario Bros, Space Invaders or Sonic the Hedgehog.
There’s even a section devoted to those nifty handheld games like Donkey Kong which preceded today’s streamlined 3DS and Nintendo Switch consoles, each one bringing back flashes of early ’80s memories.
The Nostalgia Box is wonderfully decorated, with a stunning mural at the far end of the museum featuring a host of iconic characters like Pacman, Donkey Kong and Crash Bandicoot, and making for a cool backdrop for those selfies you just know you’ll be taking.
The venue is available to hire for special events including birthdays, hens’ nights and corporate parties.
Get off of the living room couch or from behind your cooped-up office desk and veer into a world where retro gaming rules the roost. This place gets extra credits for a fun day out.
