↑ WHAT: Waffles vs Pancakes Board Game. DESCRIPTION: What two things we do we like to do around the dining table? Eat breakfast is one of them. Playing board games is another. Heck, why not combine both with this fun game that’s as simply to play as it is fun. Cards featuring waffles and pancakes are scattered across the table (along with a couple of shuffled in cards – ‘Food Fighter’ and ‘Totally Toast’). Team 1 is Waffles. Team 2 is Pancakes (two players can play, too, each choosing one of these). ↑ WHAT: Ticket to Ride: Europe Board Game. DESCRIPTION: If you can’t afford to travel to Europe these holidays, the next best thing might be playing this beautifully designed board game. Like the original Ticket to Ride, the game is elegant and simple, with players looking to claim train routes between cities of turn-of-the-century: their plans to reach olde exotic cities like Constantinople, Edinburgh, Lisbon and Moscow (yes, yes, some of these are still around today). ↑ WHAT: Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 Bluetooth Headset. DESCRIPTION: Remember those Tamagotchi toys from the 1990s – tiny digital pets we held in our hands to preoccupy ourselves during the adverts while watching telly? ↑ WHAT: Why do People Queue for Brunch? by Felicity Lewis et al. DESCRIPTION: I saw a long, long queue of potential customers waiting outside of a frozen yogurt outlet the other day, and thought to myself I’d never line up in the Perth summer heat just for yogurt. Quite frankly, I’d never line up for anything unless it was absolutely necessary. As if the universe sensed my enquiry, I got back to my desk that day to discover a new book to review, begging the question on its cover: Why do people queue for brunch?
Spoiler alert: the answer is partly because it alludes to the popularity and assumed scarcity of a product, mixed in with reasons of FOMO and a desire to be part of the ‘social’.
I still think it’s stupid; surely there are hundreds of other options in our inner cities and suburbs. Still, a whole chapter is devoted to the subject in this clever book, curated and edited by Felicity Lewis of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. Along with fellow correspondents to these papers, this ‘explainer’ type book also answers queries ranging from the trivial (What’s pickleball? How do you build a great sandcastle?) to the more serious (Why is cancer so hard to cure?) to the outright unnecessary but still rather titillating (Where did budgie smugglers come from?). It all makes for great, leisurely reading over the holidays, and plenty of dedication has gone into it, right up to the ironic little illustrations that intro each chapter. RRP: $32.99. In Perth, there are trusted outlets such as Kailis and the Correia Fishing Co that provide quality produce and also tips on how best to prepare fish, mollusc and crustacea dishes. In Melbourne, the go-to specialists appear to be Anthony and Laura de Florio Yotis, the couple behind The Fishmonger’s Son fishmongery in Carlton North. With a surname like Yotis, there’s got to be Greek heritage there, and the couple have now authored their own expert guide in the form of this quality book.
Seafood is no doubt going to be on the festive dining agenda this year and to get your family chef in the perfect frame of mind for prepping and cooking it properly, this guide is a must-give gift.
The authors go through the favourite fish found on Australian menus, from Barramundi to Blue-Eye Trevalla, letting you know the best ways to cook each and what best to serve with them. Shellfish, too, gets a special section to itself. And recipes? There’s pages of them, from simple pizzas made with exotic sea fare toppings, to easy one-pots and surprise twists on classic favourites (anyone for Sesame Prawn Sausage Rolls?). This is a beaut book for fans of seafood and food culture enthusiasts alike. I say this just as I take the last bite of my lunchtime tuna sandwich. ↑ WHAT: The Broadsheet Melbourne Cookbook. DESCRIPTION: Melbourne has been renowned as a café capital for decades now but it was at the turn of the millennium, really, when its restaurants – along with established cafés – began appearing on the world culinary map. By 2009, one publication in particular – Broadsheet – began documenting all that is good and great about dining in and around Melbourne. In 2015, The Broadsheet Melbourne Cookbook was first published, proving just how serious its journalists were in covering the expansive topic of quality food.
This latest incarnation of the cookbook is as serious in content as it is glorious in its presentation. The photography jumps from classic-style inhouse restaurant shots, to photos of chefs in their favourite gardens, to such impressive macro closeups of dishes, you feel like you’re the meat in the gourmet sandwich – in a good way, of course.
Featured venues include classic establishments and quirkier niche eateries, with the likes of Soi 38, Tedesca Osteria, Manze, Embla, Gimlet, Nomad and Pidapipo all in the mix. In sum, this is a gorgeously laid-out tome that leaves your average cookbooks on the bottom shelf fighting for your attention amid the dusty spuds and bulbs of garlic.
