THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

90s Entertainment is the New Retro Craze, Paving the Way for the Comeback of Some All-Time Greats

As we move forward with each passing year, we get closer to a new decade being classified as “retro.” Right now, we’re very much in the midst of 1990s pop culture being viewed with the reverence of being retro. While some aspects of this decade can be brushed aside, like fashion and music, generally speaking, films and games in particular look to be making a comeback in one way or another.

With these two entertainment mediums as the focus, here, we’re going explore the range of the draw of some true 1990s hits. In some cases, creatives are bringing them back with just a few modernization tweaks or even transporting the pop culture icon into a brand new format, and in others, it’s about piggybacking on the fondness of the original.

Retro Movies Coming Back in Force

Many of the hit films of the 1990s remain beloved to this day in their original form. Of course, one of the trends of the day is actually remaking films – or adding needless sequels or prequels decades later. Still, the focus has turned to 90s hit films to bring them back to the big screen. Since 2020, we’ve already seen Mortal Kombat, Sudden Death, and the many heinous live-action remakes of animated classics around those.

On the way, there are even more coming out of Hollywood. Among the list of retro classics getting a US remake are 1997’s Anaconda, 1991’s Cape Fear, 1993’s Cliffhanger, 1998’s Blade, and even 1999’s Idle Hands. Few have landed particularly well with fans of the originals, but most do rather well at the box office or on streaming platforms. For some hit 90s films, the stronger play has been to pivot to another corner of entertainment.

One of the most popular landing spots for branded games right now is iGaming. Here, sites for betting, online casino gaming, and online bingo revel in having official branded slots for players to enjoy. This is particularly true of the range of slots at online bingo UK platforms. Not only is bingo, while modernized online, seen as quite a retro game, but there are also hit 90s brands like Dumb and Dumber Route to Riches readily available to play online.

Bringing Back Games with Welcomed Tweaks

The 1990s was a breakthrough decade for home video gaming and led to the creation of pioneering IPs that not only elevated the entertainment medium of the day, but also paved the way for so many of the games that sell millions of copies today. Most recently, all six of the original Tomb Raider games have been remastered and released as two purchases, which, as the DS sales report details, helped to spur the franchise beyond 100 million units sold.

Tomb Raider first arrived in 1996 and continues to be a huge part of the modern space, even in the form of remasters. On the remakes front, the sensational RPG Final Fantasy VII, which originally arrived in 1997, has been given a full remake to the extent that the original story will now span a trilogy of triple-A releases. Even niche or cult 1990s games are seen as viable for remasters or remakes, like the Gex Trilogy or Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.

The retro craze has come for the 1990s, and with it, we’re getting to relive and even experience some all-time greats once again.
