THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Notice how so many celebs are coveting the ‘Kylie’ haircut? Here’s why…

Kylie Minogue looking splendidly casual-posh at a Chanel Fall/Winter 2026-2027 show during Paris Fashion Week in March. Look for that extra bit of ‘jhooj’ up the top of her head.

Kylie Minogue has earned a great deal of recognition and respect recently. That’s kudos right around the globe. Indeed, since the success of Padam Padam on international charts – from Aussie and U.S. radio playlists to singles charts in Serbia and Israel – it seems all the universe wants a piece of our Kylie, none more obviously than the celebrity world.

In the magazines, on the talk shows, on podcasts and on the web in general, Kylie just seems to be everywhere. In just a couple of years, the artist has enjoyed a sell-out residency in Vegas, cameo-ed on stream telly in 2025’s The Residence, been part of retro-fab exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Arts Centre and the Australian Music Vault; featured in Time‘s 100 Most Influential People list, appeared in Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, done more talk shows and podcasts than I could name, enjoyed a decent audience turnout for her Netflix documentary series, and more recently delivered a dandy duet with Madonna. And the momentum keeps on keeping on.

Now, it seems, everybody is coveting Kylie’s hair.

Just the other day I was speed-scrolling through Facebook and almost got whiplash when I did a double-take of a post in which Miley Cyrus was looking remarkably like Kylie.

While Miley usually rocks out in her own cool, put-together looks, it seems that a little of Kylie’s aesthetic has rubbed off on her. I’m going to call it ‘The Mylie’. The casual white tee over tight monochrome leggings. The perfectly lined pouty lips. But most obviously, the middish-length, semi-styled/semi-relaxed hairstyle, with just that extra bit of zhuzh – or as I like to call it, jhooj.

Look at the following picture of Miley – in promotion of her new album Bass Persuades – and tell me you don’t see what I see.

Then, just yesterday, I caught a snap of Nicole Kidman getting told off at the Emmy Awards (for talking during the host’s introduction) and there she was looking very much like our Ky in an updo that, again, said semi-styled/semi-relaxed, with just that extra bit of jhooj for jhoojness sakes.

“Look here. I was on a TV series first, too, you know. And a music video.” Nicole Kidman in quasi Kylie mode.

Lately, too, I’ve been seeing pics of Charli XCX looking inspired by Ky, the stills for her Camera music video looking very Kylie-on-the-cover-of-Cream circa 2005. Hair a bit messy but definitely with the jhooj – almost just got out of bed, in fact; tight leggings – complete with La Europa looking appliqué; and appearing rather monocrhome fantastique. The French invented cinema, you see.

Who wore it best? Kylie Minogue on the cover of Cream’s Film Issue in 2005; Charli XCX in 2026.

At the Met Gala this year, “looser, honey blonde waves” is what was touted as the style for the season, as exemplified by actress Sarah Pidgeon (below), who – work it, rinse, repeat – kept the look going for the Emmys red carpet this week. But do watch that regrowth, girls. Sometimes it can start to look a little Cruella.

Kylie has been serving perfect semi-relaxed, honey blonde, jhoojy looks since I met her in 1994. She had an up-do on that day but it was pretty much honey blonde, had a bit of a kick, and was jhoojy-ish just the same. Nicole was still very liberal with the tousled curls back then; Charli was just two and not quite yet jumping on trampolines with no underwear on; and Sarah hadn’t even been born yet.

The look itself is not absolutely original. In fact, it’s probably been on public display since the early 1950s when Hollywood actresses would whip up an aesthetic that was suitable for relaxing by the pool but jhoojy enough to be photographed in – just in case the paparazzi dropped by. In fact, for the cover art of her 2003 album, Body Language, in which there’s quite a bit of honey, blonde, wave, and jhooj, Kylie said she was going for a bit of a “Brigitte Bardot vibe”. And it’s a look that pays in dividends. So, I’m not surprised that even Miley has gone for a similar style for her latest ‘era’. Be it in homage to Brigitte or a nod to Kylie, it’s a look that, quite clearly, rocks.

For the record, Kylie’s main hairstylist is a cutie named Christian Vermaak, who also does her makeup for major events, music performances, and high-profile editorial shoots. He who has a wonderful way with scissors, comb and blowdryer has created a very versatile look here. It’s a clever cut for several reasons. The woman wearing it gets to hint to those she meets that she is cool, casual and posh in equal parts. The look is playful but can take a gal from brunch to the office to afterwork drinks – and always looks polished (if a fly-away might make its way in just tell them that it’s jhooj). It says oh-so glamorous but is never gauche. And it doesn’t take too long to achieve – less hard ironing, easier on the blow-out time, and not too much product in there so as to keep things a little more natural looking.

Now, I myself have short, curly, Caesar-ish hair that I can’t do very much with, but let me tell you, I’ll be donning ‘The Kylie’ the next time friends come round for a night of drinks, dressups and shenanigans.

Thank you, Kylie, for keeping it classic-fantastic.

That Madonna and Kylie collab is out and it’s pretty fab, but wait, did Madonna just throw shade at Pepsi at the end of the video?
