Golf can be a wonderful thing – unless you’re the person waiting around while someone takes 14 practice swings before finally missing the hole. Enter BucketGolf, the backyard-friendly version of the sport that strips away the expensive green fees, dress codes and four-hour commitment, while leaving all the fun bits intact.
Originally developed in the US as a homemade family game in 2016, BucketGolf has since evolved into a fully portable golf experience and found a much bigger audience after appearing on Shark Tank. The concept is brilliantly simple: set up your buckets, create your own course and start swinging. Every hole is a par three, with players attempting to hit the bucket in three shots. Hit the outside and you’ve completed the hole; chip the ball inside and you score a bonus stroke off your tally. Hazards such as bushes or water add a one-stroke penalty.
The clever part is that you design the course yourself, meaning a backyard, park, beach or holiday spot can become your own miniature golf course.
It’s way easy to set up and pack away, with portable sets able to be popped into a nifty carry bag provided, while the game itself can accommodate everyone from experienced golfers to people whose relationship with a golf club is strictly theoretical.
And that’s really the appeal: BucketGolf feels less like serious game of golf and more like the kind of gloriously competitive outdoor activity suited to a barbecue, holiday house or beach day – with just enough skill involved to ensure somebody inevitably demands a rematch.
