THE NEW. RETRO. MODERN.

Actor Patrick Stewart has died, aged 86

It has been announced this morning that actor Patrick Stewart has died, aged 86. Stewart, most famous for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek film and TV series, actually passed away on Wednesday evening, Los Angeles time, following “a brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and something called ‘Lewy Body Dementia’, said a spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak.

Stewart’s diagnoses had not been previously disclosed and so his death comes as a shock to many. Indeed, just last July, the actor said in an interview that he had no intention of ever “retiring” from acting, and that he has always loved to be challenged by new work.

“As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older,” he told TV Insider in a July interview to mark the 60th anniversary of the Star Trek series. “That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work, like voicing a pig’s head in Riz Ahmed‘s brilliant new series Bait.”

Stewart had always embodied an intelligent, “thinking man’s” actor but he also had a great sense of humour.

Apart from his regular appearances in Star Trek and its off-shoots, Stewart starred in the X-Men series, and a variety of films including the original Dune (1984), The Avengers (various), X-Men (various), A Christmas Carol (1999), and was even a voice actor in The Emoji Movie (2017).

Stewart was a classically trained actor who very much lent a certain seriousness to film and TV genres that might otherwise lack that.
