The NGV has new clothes
When it comes to cutting-edge fashion, it doesn’t get much more ‘out-there’ than Viktor&Rolf. As self-confessed outsiders of the fashion world, this daring Dutch duo are famous for pushing their designs beyond the world of the catwalk and high street couture and out into the boundless realm of the avant-garde.
Now thanks to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), we mere mortals get the opportunity to feast our eyes on these other-worldly creations. The exhibition features over 35 pieces from the designers’ collections, presented alongside classic designs taken from Viktor&Rolf’s considerable archive and international museum collections. Audiences will also get the chance to survey selections from their work-in-progress ‘Dolls’, which sees replicas of antique dolls dressed in the designers’ most iconic looks.
So whether you’re a dedicated follower of fashion or an avant-garde enthusiast, this exhibition has something for you to get excited about; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see how these two Midases of material have managed to turn rags into artistic riches. Chris Prindiville
‘Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists’ runs until 26 February at the National Gallery of Victoria.
