DJ and producer Avicii to have a mental illness and suicide prevention foundation set up in his honour
The family of deceased DJ and producer Avicii are setting up a foundation in his memory, one which will “initially focus on supporting people and organisations working in the field of mental illness and suicide prevention”.
Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling, passed away on April 20, 2018, apparently from suicide. The artist had suffered from acute pancreatitis, allegedly due to excessive drinking, leading up to his death and had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014.
According to his family, the Tim Bergling Foundation will eventually be active in nature conservation and reducing climate change – two issues close to Tim’s heart.
Bergling once explained that his working name ‘Avicii’ meant “the lowest level of Buddhist hell” and that he chose the moniker because his real name was already used by someone else on Myspace.
“Tim wanted to make a difference,” reads a statement from his family. “Starting a foundation in his name is our way to honor his memory and continue to act in his spirit.”
Avicii was regularly named one of the world’s highest paid DJs, having worked with various artists including Madonna, Nile Rodgers, Wyclef Jean and Coldplay.
