Some gamers like adventure. Others like the sport of gaming. And still others prefer good old-fashioned full-on shooters.
Enter Freedom Finger, a hand-drawn, hand-animated shoot-em-up that melds the cartoon aesthetic of Yellow Submarine (albeit a little rougher around the edges) with the fuck-em-all attitude of Adult Swim.
Created by Wide Right Interactive – whose name pretty much says it all – Freedom Finger appears like some in-yer-face, no-holds-barred, hold-no-prisoners promo for arms use. Or, as game review website Steam suggests, “a music driven, side-scrolling shooter that sends you blasting, punching, and smashing your way across 36 levels of batshit crazy cartoon action”.
That of course depends on your perspective of what makes for ‘light’ violence.
The game explores hot-button topics such as US foreign policy, communism, the craft itself of video game creation, and, Sriracha sauce (go figure!).
Says Jim Dirschberger, Head of Wide Right Interactive (who was also the creator of Nickelodeon’s irreverent series Sanjay and Craig): “I’ve always been a gamer and after doing a TV show I wanted to do something more interactive and just said, ‘What the hell? Let’s make a game.’
“I love shooters,” Dirschberger continues, “especially bullet hell games, but I suck at them. Modern bullet hells give me massive anxiety. So I thought I’d create a, I dunno, bullet light game.”
