Comme des Garçons exhibition officially opens at NGV
With a name that literally translates to “like one of the boys”, designer label Comme des Garçons has done a wonderful job in shaking up the gender agenda on the catwalk, in fashion magazines, and beyond.
Now fashionistas will have the chance to get up close to (almost) touching point of some of the most outstanding outfits to come out of the house (or住居in Japanese) of Garçons in an exhibition entitled Collecting Comme.
Hosted by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Collecting Comme will be Australia’s first survey exhibition fully dedicated to the Comme des Garçons label and its trailblazing designer Rei Kawakubo.
The collection has been generously gifted to the Gallery by donor Takamasa Takahashi, and will include loans from his personal collection, along with a portrayal of the radical concepts and design methods that have informed Kawakubo’s practice for almost 50 years.
Kawakubo has redefined fashion throughout her career, subverting garment shape and function, reframing ideas of beauty, and proposing a new relationship between the body and clothing.
Collecting Comme is on from 31 October 2019 to 26 July 2020 at NGV International.
Entry is free, and the fashion all sure to be fabulous.
