Fame. The Wicker Man. The Day the Earth Stood Still. A Nightmare on Elm Street. These are just a handful of the badly received remakes that have featured on our cinema screens over the last couple of decades. And when it was announced back in 2017 that Jumanji would also be getting a makeover, fans of the Robin Williams classic held their breath. Nonetheless, the movie turned out to be surprisingly decent and with great performances from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Karen Gillan and Jack Black, a sequel was announced midway through last year. With the first trailer dropping all the way back in July, we’re now starting to learn more about Jumanji: The Next Level.
The Need For a Sequel
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle centered around four characters (Spencer, Fridge, Martha and Bethany, who get pulled into a video game version of the popular board game. Although the premise of Welcome To The Jungle was slightly different to the 1995 classic, it enjoyed mainstream success and brought Jumanji back into the pop culture spotlight. As well as the release of various jungle related merchandise, video games for the PS4, Xbox One, and other next-generation consoles made their way into gaming charts across the world. The development of a Jumanji video slot game, entrenched within the various slots and games at Regal Wins, only further confirmed that we’d all gone crazy for Jumanji again and, with this in mind, a sequel was never in doubt.
Release Date and Casting
A tweet from Karen Gillan earlier in the year suggested that the movie would be out around Christmas time, and Sony have since confirmed that this will indeed be the case. With the first movie released on 20th December 2017 to much acclaim, it appears that the producers are once again aiming to replicate the same sort of success around the festive period. In terms of casting, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Nick Jonas are all set to reprise their roles as the in-game avatars which are controlled by real people. The big news, however, is that Danny DeVito joins the cast as Spencer’s grandfather and that Johnson will be channeling him in The Next Level. No, really. We’re not kidding.
Although we’re not yet entirely sure of the full plot, we do now have some idea about the premise of the next movie. In a nutshell, Spencer tries to repair the Jumanji game, which is destroyed at the end of Welcome To The Jungle (spoiler alert). He subsequently disappears, and his friends are sucked back into the game, which now appears to be malfunctioning and throwing up new challenges at will. According to the movies official synopsis, one thing we can guarantee is that the gang will “have to brave parts unknown…from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains”. Oh, and there’s sure to be lots of Danny DeVito and Danny Glover impressions from Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Which is always something to look forward to.
A Sure Fire Hit
The release of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle led to both Jumanji veterans and newcomers re-watching the 1995 classic. This, coupled with the success of the movie itself, has undoubtedly whet our appetites for more jungle based action. As a result, the release of The Next Level is highly anticipated within the movie sphere and, with the addition of Danny DeVito, the movie is sure to once again sit atop the box office come the new year.
