Lithuania gets a little loopy with its social distancing ideas…
Here’s something kooky for your Friday.
Restaurants in the city of Vilnius, Lithuania, are turning social distancing into an art form, collaborating with local fashionistas to turn empty restaurant tables into fashion displays. It’s certainly making restaurants and cafes look more ‘popular’, filling up the spaces between big black X’s on the floor.
As of this week, the country has eased its restrictions on restaurants – as well as cafes and bars – to allow them to operate indoors, yet strict social distancing requirements remain in place.
Indoor tables that would otherwise be vacant are now seated by mannequins wearing the latest season’s fashion.
“We decided to reach out to our neighbours, fashion boutique stores, and invited them to use our empty tables to showcase their newest collections.”
“Empty tables inside our restaurant look rather odd, and we don’t have any way to remove them,” explained Bernie Ter Braak, the owner of ‘Cosy’ restaurant, who co-authored this idea with a local well-known fashion designer, Julija Janus.
“[So] we decided to reach out to our neighbours, fashion boutique stores, and invited them to use our empty tables to showcase their newest collections. The news spread, and well-known designers joined this project, which keeps gaining interest across the city.”
At each table, and between perusing the venue’s menus, visitors are able to read information about the exhibited fashion and where each piece can be purchased.
So that’s your dining, socialising, and fashion decisions taken care of in one!
