Ellen DeGeneres in trouble after allegations of racist behaviour on-set and backstage

She’s all smiles and love hearts for the camera but when it comes to day-to-day business dealing, it seems Ellen DeGeneres is a bit of a hard-ass.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has become the subject of an internal investigation by WarnerMedia after many employees have reported negative treatment from DeGeneres herself.

Telepictures and WarnerMedia – the company that owns Ellen’s show – sent a memo to staffers last week, notifying them that lawyers will be in touch to ask them about their experiences on set.

The memo arrives following a flutter of unflattering reports about working conditions on the set and behind the scenes.

In April, Variety reported a story about the distress and outrage among DeGeneres’ production crew, who were subjected to poor communication and told to expect reduced compensation during initial coronavirus shutdowns.

Earlier this month, BuzzFeed published a report that alleged racist behaviour and intimidation on the show, including that carried out by the host.

The complaints ranged from small arguments to jokes about mistaking two black female employees with the same hairstyle, as well as criticism of statements allegedly made to a staffer by executive producer Ed Glavin.

WarnerMedia has been under pressure in the past three years to investigate claims of workplace hostility in response to increased focus on misconduct in the wake of the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements.
