Versace’s plus-size models add a more genuine beauty to the runway
Milan Fashion Week has slowly but steadily been making progress on one of its greatest faults: a lack of diversity.
Of all fashion festivals around the world, Milan Fashion Week has been one of the slowest to cotton on to diversity and inclusion.
But this week, fashion house Versace has changed that, with the inclusion of several plus-size models in its catwalk runs.
Donatella Versace has personally cast three beauties – Alva Laire, Kortleve, and Precious Lee alongside runway fixtures like Joan Smalls and Irina Shayk – to showcase her label’s latest wares.
Versace was actually Kortleve’s third show this week, after walking Etro and Fendi, but for Lee and Claire, the Versace show was special as it marked both their Milan debuts.
Other fashion festivals, such as those in New York, London and Paris, have all featured plus-size models on the runway in the past – even when major fashion icons have been anti-plus.
Put it this way, Karl Lagerfeld ought to be rolling around in his grave by now.
