Peters Drumstick Minis Milo: where two Aussie icons blend beautifully

When I was a kid in the 1970s, my sisters and I would wait for the weekly drop of wonderful ice creams, courtesy of our Uncle Carlo who used to work as a factory floor manager with Peter’s Ice Cream. Uncle Carlo would have dibs on the ice creams that came off the production line but weren’t quite right for the shops – rejects if you like. Drumsticks with a bit of scorched chocolate, Freddos with bung eyes, Fudge Bars with too much fudge leaked onto the pop stick, even Twin Poles where excess red had leaked into the yellow bit. To Peter’s management these were flaws. To us it was Ice Cream Heaven.

If Uncle Carlo were around today and still working at Peter’s, and if the Food Standard Codes weren’t as impossibly stringent as they are in 2026 (which I suppose is a good thing), he would have needed a truck to deliver the volume and variety of ice creams that customers are spoilt with today. Drumstick alone has no less than 10 varieties on shelves at any given time, from original to all manner of flavoured minis to even plant-based/vegan options. As for Peter’s Ice Cream collaboration with other brands, well, since the company is co-owned by Nestlé now, the collabs are gladly arriving thick and fast.

Just released from Peters this month are new Drumstick Minis Milo which are big on texture – packed with that familiar Milo flavour and tasty choc pieces throughout. All in a crispy wafer cone, of course, with a yummy choccy tip. Is it me, or has the choccy tip on Drumsticks gotten bigger – which I love, of course.

The collision of two Aussie icons delivers exactly what you expect: creamy, malted Milo in ice cream tucked into a crisp mini cone, capped with chocolate and scattered choc flakes for good, textural punch.

Flavour-wise, the Milo comes through gently rather than boldly, which may divide purists, but it keeps things nice if you’re enjoying your ice cream with a coffee or some other beverage accompaniment. You don’t want too much competition on the taste buds.

As a freezer staple, these minis are fun, fuss-free, and built for repeat grabs. Now… a six-pack in the freezer may not be as abundant as when Uncle Carlo would deliver boxes of Drumsticks to us, but the important thing is to keep a few in the freezer for whenever that sense of nostalgia, taste, and desire for good homegrown products hits.
