Lynch Pin: a trio of David Lynch specials linked together for a MUBI streaming special
There’s something perversely fitting about David Lynch landing on MUBI – a streaming platform that feels less like a library and more like a late-night art-inflected transmission from another dimension.
From August 10 to September 7, the cult channel will host a tightly wound triptych of David Lynch specials anchored by Inland Empire (2006), and flanked by the companion documentaries LYNCH (one) and Lynch2 (both from 2007).
Lynch once said his fascination with abandoned factories lies in “how electricity enters and exits”- a line that might double as a thesis for this entire series.
Inland Empire is pure current: unstable, flickering, and capable of short-circuiting narrative logic at any moment. Shot over three years without a finished script and on lo-fi digital cameras, this freaked even us at Cream – with it’s fragmented dialogue and photography, stitched together by Laura Dern in a performance that stretches, snaps, and somehow holds it all in place.
The accompanying documentaries act as eerie access points into that process, capturing the grind, the madness and the strange beauty of creation in real time. Together, this trio offer a rare chance to wander through David Lynch’s industrial dreamscape, where every nightmare hums with the possibility of becoming something luminous.
