A cool blend of contemporary & retro culture

Annual manga and anime fest set to be a smash

Smash Anime & Manga Festival cream magazine @2x

The Japanese pop culture craze has well and truly arrived in Australia. And for those who know their Pokemon from their Digimon, their Dragon Ball GT from their Dragon Ball Z, the Smash! Manga & Anime Show has become the event on the convention calendar.

Across August 19 and 20, enthusiasts and aficionados from around the nation will gather at the Rosehill Gardens in Sydney to take part in this Japanese-themed pop culture extravaganza.

Running in Australia since 2006, Smash! has established itself as one of the country’s leading promoters of Japanese pop culture. In bringing the biggest and best names in the anime and gaming industries to our shores, Smash! has allowed local audiences to gain an insider’s point of view. This desire for closer contact with their heroes should come as no surprise, with non-Japanese audiences becoming more and more interested in the cultural origins of their favourite shows, comics, and video games.

Smash! 2017 looks to keep up this tradition with the inclusion of special guests including cosplay superstars Baozi and Hana, voice actors Shizuka Itoh, Daisuke Sakaguchi and Shiori Mikami, manga illustrator Asami Hagiwara, illustrator Redjuice, Japanese DJs Yui Kanan and Teddyloidand a whole lot more.

With special guest panels, exhibitions aplenty, rotated screenings, workshops, gaming tournaments and oodles of cosplay competitions, Smash! is sure to be, well, a smash once more.  Chris Prindiville
